Dr. Kjerfve is a coastal physical oceanographer with extensive academic leadership experience in higher education. In 2013, he was elected as a corresponding member to the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. He has served in several university leadership positions:
  • Chancellor of American University of Sharjah (UAE), 2014-2019
  • President of World Maritime University (Sweden), 2009-2014
  • Dean College of Geosciences, Texas A&M University, 2004-2009
  • Director, Marine Science Program, University of South Carolina, 2000-2004

Prior to joining the American University of Sharjah, he served as President of the World Maritime University from 2009 to 2014, and prior to that as the Dean of the College of Geosciences and Professor of Oceanography at Texas A&M University (2004-2009). While at Texas A&M, he oversaw four academic departments, the Texas Sea Grant Program, and the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), including the 475' ocean sciences drilling vessel, D/V JOIDES Resolution. Dr. Kjerfve was previously Professor of Marine and Geological Sciences at the University of South Carolina (1973-2004), and served as the Director of the Marine Science Program for four years.
Dr. Kjerfve holds Ph.D., M.S., and B.A. degrees from Louisiana State University (Marine Sciences), University of Washington (Oceanography), and Georgia Southern University (Mathematics), respectively. Professor Kjerfve's expertise is coastal and estuarine physical oceanography. He has published 13 books and more than 250 scientific journal papers, book chapters, and reports. He has supervised 14 Ph.D. dissertations, 24 M.S. theses, and taught more than 6,000 oceanography students.
